Hi folks,

I just want to remind all members to not delay on renewing. I will be processing all payments and updating the roster April 30, the roster for May 1 will go up that night. If the park doesn’t see your name on the list, you may not be able to swim (well at least outside of the swim area).

Now I am going to make an appeal to you members that sometimes forget to renew in a timely manner, please renew promptly. We have already paid our insurance for the season, and the park dues are due shortly. We need over 150 members to break even or we will have to raise the dues. Currently we have only 50 current members and nearly half of them are new as of this year. From the start, Al and I wanted to keep the cost of membership low, but over the past few years, renewal rates have been very low. Over the past 6 years, Al and I have tested 900 people (we have probably been to the lake over 200 times just to test people), yet less than 1 in 5 actually return from year to year?

Seriously, if you use Shadowcliffs, please make a point to renew promptly, it only takes a few minutes. For those of you that promptly renew, thank you very much, you make it all possible.

Thank you kindly,
Al and John

Changes to the Website 2014

Hi folks, last weekend, I made a bunch of changes to the website to make it easier to find what you need. You will notice at the top of this page there is a new tab/page called calendar. I will be putting in events (like testing days, or other events) that might be of interest to members or prospective members. If you want to add something to the calendar, let me know and I will try to get it put on the calendar.

Also, on the membership page I’ve added many big garish buttons to make it easier to find and click on what you need. It’s not pretty, but I hope it’s easy.

Due to fewer than 5 RSVP’s as of Friday, Al and I decided to cancel the event. Our aplogies to those that wanted to attend.

The park has changed it’s hours policy from years past and we will be unable to have a full moon swim this September. The park will be closing at 7:30 PM starting September 4. In the past we have had a September Full Moon Swim and the park did not close until 10:00 PM.

In lieu of a Full Moon Swim, we will be hosting an after swim Buffet at the Beach. Al and I will be bringing soft drinks, fruit salad, appetizers, soup and salad to the lake. We will be set up at 6:30 PM, just as most of you folks will be finishing your Friday evening swim.

Please send us an e-mail to let us know that you are coming so that we caqn get an accurate head count.

Please RSVP here by Friday Sept. 7: I will attend the Buffet-at-the-Beach Sept 14

RSVP here: I’m coming to the Full Moon Swim!

For those of you who made it to either of the Full Moon swims last year, you will recall what a great time we had. Well, it’s that time again. Those of you who have not, here is a quick overview/preview. Swim start at 8:30 PM
Technically the full moon is on the 24th, but hey, we’re close enough. The moon should be just clearing the horizon along the back wall (over the point) as we are swimming on our return leg.

As we have in the past, before our swim, we do a quick beach clean up, it’s a help to the park staff, who will have to work a little longer day for us.

For more background information refer to these previous posts: Full-moon-Deux 2009 and Full Moon Swim Recap

Here’s the tentative “schedule”
Friday August, 27
6:30 PM get together and Pizza Party at the beach!
7:15 PM start beach cleanup walk
7:30 PM set out light sticks at rockpile or point or both (TBD)
8:00 – 8:15 PM Full head count of all that are swimming, additional sign in
on the beach
8:30 PM Swim start
9:30 PM Last person out of the water and accounted for
10:00 PM Park gates locked, you’re spending the night if you ain’t
out by then.

How dark will it be?
Sunset: 7:45 PM
Civil Twilight ends (horizon still visible) : 8:14 PM
Nautical Twilight ends (getting dark): 8:46 PM
Astronomical twilight ends (okay it’s dark now for sure): 9:20 PM

Keep in mind we will have glow stick markers showing the point, rock pile and return to the beach as well as kayaks and everyone will have a glow bracelet. It should be a colorful event. When we start the swim, it will still be light enought to see the far wall, (the point and rockpile). On the return leg to the beach, the buildings have lights on them and are easy to spot. We’ll have kayaks in the water to track swimmers in the water. One kayak will set out the light sticks and follow the last folks in.

The night swims are really fun and different. The evening should be incredibly pleasant, the water warm, and glass smooth. The full moon swim has special meaning to Al and I, but that’s grist for another post….

Anyone not a member yet is welcome to sign up earlier in the evening, though please let me know if you are interested ahead of time at: sign_up@shadowcliffsorcas.com
